Use Tools for Builders in Claude, ChatGPT and Codex
The Tools for Builders connector lets Claude, ChatGPT or Codex work in your own account. You can ask what you are owed, have a proposal drafted from your price book, move Thursday's visit to Friday or change the hours on your website. It uses your sign-in, so it sees what you see and nothing else.

Adding the connector is free. Plans
Add it in Claude
- Open Claude and go to Settings, then Connectors.
- Choose Add custom connector.
- Paste
https://my.toolsforbuilders.com/mcpas the URL and save. - Choose Connect. Claude opens the Tools for Builders sign-in. Sign in with your usual account and press Allow.
- Start a new chat and ask for something small, like "What is on my schedule today?"
Claude on the web, the desktop app and the phone apps all use the same connector once it is added. On a Team or Enterprise plan, an admin may need to allow custom connectors first.
Add it in ChatGPT
- Custom connectors are in developer mode in ChatGPT, and OpenAI has been renaming and moving these screens. At the time of writing, open chatgpt.com/plugins, press the plus button and choose Add custom MCP server.
- Enter a name, choose a public endpoint and paste
https://my.toolsforbuilders.com/mcp. - Choose OAuth for authentication, accept the warning and create it. ChatGPT sends you to the Tools for Builders sign-in. Sign in and press Allow.
- Check the tools ChatGPT lists, then start a new chat and ask for something small.
OpenAI changes this area often, and custom connectors may not be available on every plan or workspace, so these steps can differ from what you see. Tell us at hello@toolsforbuilders.com if they do.
Add it in Codex
- Add the server:
codex mcp add tools-for-builders --url https://my.toolsforbuilders.com/mcp - Sign in:
codex mcp login tools-for-builders. Codex opens the Tools for Builders sign-in in your browser. - Run /mcp in Codex to see that the server is active, then ask it for something small.
Other tools that support remote MCP servers with OAuth can use the same address.
What it can do
Only the tools your account can use are listed. If you have JobTools but not WebTools, the website tools do not appear.
Clients and leads
Find a client by name, phone or address. See their properties, contacts, notes, open proposals and what they owe. Add or update clients, contacts and notes. Add a lead, move it through your stages, attach notes and links, and turn it into a client with a draft proposal.
Proposals
Draft a proposal from your price book, change a draft, add a note and see which proposals are waiting on a client. A proposal stays a draft until you say send, and then it asks again (see the next section).
Jobs, schedule and field work
Create a job, schedule or move a visit, mark a visit done and read your day. For a crew member on the phone it can clock in and out, tick a checklist, add visit notes and add a photo to a visit.
Invoices and payments
Make a draft invoice, see who owes you and how much, and email an invoice to its client after you confirm. When a check or cash payment has already come in, it writes the payment down against the invoice. It does not take the payment.
Your numbers
Ask for your month, your pipeline, which lead sources and services sell, how each salesperson or crew is doing, and job profit. What it shows depends on your role: crew see their own numbers, and costs show only to the owner.
Price book and photos
Look up or add items in your price book. If you use CompanyCam, find a project, link it to a job or lead, and copy a photo into the record.
Your website
See your pages, read what they say, change a heading or paragraph, change the phone number everywhere, add a page, reorder the menu, swap a photo, check the site for search problems, read contact form messages and undo the last change. Every change goes to a draft first. Publishing is a separate step that asks you.
Designs from the design tools
List your saved designs from PondTools, PoolTools, RoofTools, LawnTools, WindowTools, ClosetTools and the coatings tools, read the measurements and priced parts list, start a roof measurement from public LiDAR at an address, and send a design to JobTools as a draft proposal.
Your account and the forum
Read your plan and credit balance, and read or update the business details every tool shares (name, phone, hours, services). Search and read the public Talk forum, and have a reply drafted for you to post yourself.
What it will never do
- It never charges a card or bank account, and it never refunds or voids anything. Recording a payment that already came in only writes it down.
- It never sends a text message.
- It cannot permanently delete a client, lead, job, proposal or invoice. It can archive one, which hides it until you restore it, and it will not archive anything that still owes money.
- It cannot delete a website or a page, take a site offline, or buy a domain. It can connect a domain you already own, but only after it shows you the change and you confirm.
- It does not change your plan, billing, team members or integrations.
- It does not use your AI credits or make AI pictures or video.
Two small things are worth knowing. On your website it can remove a photo or other non-page file from the draft, and you can undo that. If you ask it to move a photo between CompanyCam projects, it can remove the photo from the first project after copying it, and it asks you to confirm before it does.
How confirmations and auto-allow work
Anything that goes out of your hands asks twice. Emailing a proposal, emailing an invoice, archiving a record and publishing your website are two-step. The first call changes nothing. It returns a preview (who it goes to, the subject, the total, or what will go live) and a confirmation code that works for 10 minutes. Claude shows you the preview and only sends when you say yes. The code is tied to that exact record and its content, so if the proposal changes after the preview, or the code is used twice, the send is refused.
Everything else that changes a record (a note, a client, a draft, a visit) is a change you can see and undo in JobTools, and your assistant is told to say what it will do and wait for your OK first.
The owner can turn on auto-allow under Settings, then Claude rules. Five actions can be set to Ask every time, Auto-allow or Never: emailing a proposal, emailing an invoice, turning a lead into a client, marking a visit done and recording a payment. Auto-allow can have limits, like a dollar amount, a client email on file, named people and a daily cap. When a limit is not met, it falls back to the preview and code. Never means that action is off for Claude, and it can still be done in JobTools. Rules cannot allow charging, refunds, deleting, texts or settings, because those are not tools on the connector.
How to turn it off
- Turn it off for one person: the owner opens the Team page in JobTools and switches Claude off in that person's Claude column. It takes effect on their next request. Owners and office staff are on by default, and crew are off until the owner turns Claude on for them.
- Turn off a single action, like emailing invoices: Settings, then Claude rules, and set it to Never.
- Disconnect an app completely: open Your account, find Connected apps, and press Disconnect. That app can no longer use your account, and it shows how it was connected and when it was last used. You can also remove the connector inside Claude or ChatGPT.
- Everything Claude changed is written to your activity log in JobTools as "via Claude", and the Your account page lists the latest changes.
Things to ask it
- What is on my schedule tomorrow, and does anyone owe me money?
- Reads tomorrow's visits and your unpaid invoices, oldest first, with the total owed and what is overdue. Changes nothing.
- Draft a proposal for the Rivera patio from my price book: 400 square feet of pavers and a 20 foot sitting wall.
- Finds the client, looks up your prices and saves a draft proposal. Nothing is sent to the client.
- Send that proposal to Dana.
- Shows you who it goes to, the subject and the total, then waits. It emails the client only after you say yes.
- Dana's check for $1,200 came in today. Put it on her invoice.
- Records the payment against the invoice and tells you the new balance. It does not charge anyone.
- Change the Saturday hours on my website to 8 to noon and show me how it looks on a phone.
- Edits the draft site, takes a phone screenshot, and leaves the live site alone until you ask to publish.
- Measure the roof at 123 Main Street, Portland.
- Starts a roof measurement from public LiDAR, checks on it after about a minute and gives you the squares, pitch and a report link.
Your data
The connector sees the tool calls your assistant makes, not your conversation or its replies. For each change it keeps the tool, the action, the time, whether it worked and a short summary of the details passed (long values are cut). What your assistant looks up goes to the AI company you chose. Read the full privacy policy and the terms.
Troubleshooting and support
- Claude says it needs me to sign in again.
- A sign-in renews itself while you use it and lapses after 60 days without use. If it has lapsed, or you pressed Disconnect, open the connector in Claude settings and choose Connect.
- It says the owner has not turned Claude on for me.
- Crew are off by default. Ask the owner to switch Claude on in your row of the Team page.
- A tool says I need Pro, or that I reached the free plan limit.
- The connector can do what your plan allows in the apps.
- It cannot find a client or job I know exists.
- Archived records are hidden from the connector. Ask it to list archived records, and restore the one you need.
- The tools are missing in a chat.
- Start a new chat after you connect. Only the tools your account can use are listed, so a website tool appears only if your account has WebTools.
- I want to talk to a person.
- Write to hello@toolsforbuilders.com and say what you asked and what happened.
