Sod calculator
How many pallets and slabs of sod a lawn needs, from its size.
Pallets of sod
0 pallets
How it works
sod to order = lawn area x (1 + waste) pallets = sod to order / square feet per pallet pieces = sod to order / square feet per slab or roll
Measure the lawn as rectangles and add them up, or trace it once in LawnTools and read the area off the plan. Order whole pallets: most farms will not split one, so the last pallet usually comes with some to spare.
Pallets vary by farm and by grass. 400 to 500 square feet is common, stacked as slabs of 16 x 24 inches (2.67 sq ft) or 18 x 24 inches (3 sq ft), or as big rolls of 10 square feet and more. Ask the farm what is on their pallet and put it in.
How much extra to order
| Lawn | Extra |
|---|---|
| Simple rectangle | 5% |
| Curved beds, a few trees | 8 to 10% |
| Many beds, slopes, narrow strips | 10 to 15% |
Questions
- How many square feet are on a pallet of sod?
- Usually 400 to 500, depending on the farm and the grass. Ask the farm and enter their figure.
- How much extra sod should I order?
- 5% for a plain rectangle and 10% or more for a lawn with curved beds, trees and narrow strips, where more of each slab is cut off.
- How heavy is a pallet of sod?
- Often 2,000 to 3,000 pounds, and more when it is wet. Plan where the truck can set it down before it arrives.
- How do I prepare the ground?
- Clear the old turf and weeds, loosen the soil, and rake it smooth to about an inch below paths and edges so the new sod sits flush. Lay it the day it arrives and water it in.
