Concrete coating calculator
Gallons, kits and flake for an epoxy or polyaspartic floor, from the floor size and each coat's coverage.
Coating to order
0 gallons
How it works
gallons per coat = floor area x (1 + waste) / coverage wet film (mils) = 1,604 / coverage flake = floor area x (1 + waste) x pounds per 100 sq ft / 100 kits = gallons / kit size, rounded up, for each coat
Take the coverage for each coat from the product's data sheet. A gallon spread one mil thick (a thousandth of an inch) covers 1,604 square feet, so coverage and film thickness are two ways of saying the same thing. A 100% solids epoxy at 160 square feet a gallon goes on about 10 mils thick.
Coverage and wet film thickness
| Coverage per gallon | Wet film |
|---|---|
| 100 sq ft | 16.0 mils |
| 160 sq ft | 10.0 mils |
| 200 sq ft | 8.0 mils |
| 250 sq ft | 6.4 mils |
| 320 sq ft | 5.0 mils |
Data sheet coverage assumes concrete that has been ground to the right profile. Porous, older or heavily ground slabs soak up more of the first coat, which is what the waste allowance is for. Flake rates depend on the chip size and how full the broadcast is; use the flake maker's figure.
Questions
- How many square feet does a gallon of epoxy cover?
- It depends on the thickness. At 10 mils, a gallon of 100% solids epoxy covers about 160 square feet; at 6 mils, about 270. The product's data sheet gives the rate.
- How much flake do I need for a full broadcast?
- It depends on the chip size and the product. Flake makers give a rate per 100 square feet; enter it and the box size.
- How much extra coating should I order?
- About 10% for a smooth, properly ground slab, and more for porous or old concrete that soaks up the first coat.
- What size is a two-car garage floor?
- Usually somewhere between 20 x 20 and 24 x 24 feet, 400 to 576 square feet. Measure it, since the steps and the apron change it.
